Rand Paul assaulted in Bowling Green

A man accused of assaulting and injuring U.S. Rand Paul is a neighbor to the ophthalmologist-turned-politician and is a fellow doctor himself.

Paul, 54, has served in the Senate since 2011.

"Senator Paul was blindsided and the victim of an assault", Kelsey Cooper, a spokeswoman for Paul, said in a statement.

She added that the Senator was "fine" and the incident is now a matter for police.

Mr Paul, the junior senator for Kentucky, suffered minor injuries as a result of the assault. Stay with 8News online and on air for the latest updates.

While a motive is not officially known, Jeff Jones, a registered nurse who worked with Boucher at the Bowling Green Medical Center, described Boucher's politics as "liberal". The senator did not see Boucher approach as the properties of Paul and Boucher are adjacent.

"Kelley and I appreciate the overwhelming support after Friday's unfortunate event".

WBKO, a Bowling Green TV station, broke the news Saturday afternoon.

Records show Boucher's home is also in Bowling Green. It was unclear if Boucher has an attorney, and he could not be reached for comment late on Saturday.

In June, Paul was among several congress members practicing in Washington, D.C. for the annual congressional baseball game when a gunman opened fire, wounding Rep. Steve Scalise.
