Moore threatens lawsuit over story that threatens campaign

The top Republican in the U.S. Senate, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, said Monday that Alabama Republican Roy Moore should end his Senate candidacy in the wake of allegations he had sexual contact with a 14-year-old girl four decades ago when he was a 32-year-old local prosecutor.

In an appearance Monday afternoon with celebrity attorney Gloria Allred by her side, a woman named Beverly Young Nelson accused Moore of sexually assaulting her when she was a teenager. She described a harrowing chain of events that ended with Moore attempting to force her into a sex act in a parked auto - an episode that, she said, left her with severe bruising on her neck.

Moore said a lawsuit will be filed over the Post report that detailed the allegations against him.

"I tried fighting him off and yelling", she tearfully recalled, but "instead of stopping, he began squeezing my neck and attempting to force my head into his crotch". "I think they have a political agenda, and I think they're running that agenda".

While the TV reporter says she talked with "lots of people" for the segment, her report includes interviews with only three persons. "I don't know all the facts", Walker said. "In the next few days there will be revelations about the motivation and the content of this article", he stated, adding, "I do not expect the Washington Post to stop".

She accused him of touching her breasts and locking the door to keep her inside his vehicle.

"I believe the women", McConnell, R-Ky., said Monday in response to a question at an appearance in Louisville, Kentucky. But Moore could well ignore it since he has routinely ridiculed McConnell's performance as the Senate Republican leader and rebuffed calls from other prominent Republicans to drop out of the race. It says Moore is innocent and "has never had any sexual misconduct with anyone".

Moore's contest against Democrat Doug Moore, a former federal prosecutor, is to fill out the last three years of the seat once held by Jeff Sessions, now attorney general in President Donald Trump's Cabinet.

The crossfire escalated a GOP civil war over Moore's Senate candidacy in a December 12 special election, which until last week's allegations was viewed as an inevitable Republican win in the deep-red state.

Other national Republicans also have backed away from Moore.

The Washington Post broke the initial story last week, rocking the U.S. Senate special election in Alabama.

Some Republicans have called for Moore to step aside in light of the accusations from the Post story.

He said, "I'm counting on you to stand with me at this critical moment by chipping in a donation to help me bust through the vicious lies and attacks and get the truth out to as many voters as possible before December 12".

Even if Moore were to step aside, his name would likely remain on the ballot.
