Apple Readying Augmented-Reality Glasses For 2020 Launch

This will be a device for internal development only.

The company has not figured out how users will run the program and adjust the headset. According to the report, Apple is looking at 2019 to announce the product and ship as early as 2020. Past year it was reported Apple was working on its own version of Google Glass - smart glasses created to display images and information in its wearer's line of vision.

The big question for Apple's hardware efforts is whether the company is going to make a device priced for and targeted towards consumers, or whether it will try to capture the enterprise market first.

AR could help Apple re-energize its fan base and re-establish its mobile leadership, according to TechRepublic's Conner Forrest.

The eventual AR headset will reportedly be powered by an iOS variant now codenamed rOS, or "reality operating system". The creators of the headset will be equipped with its own screen, and now it will be on the operating system rOS. He also said that the field of view and the quality of the display itself is simply "not there yet".

If everything goes according to plan, Apple's first independent AR headset could produce "virtual meeting rooms and 360-degree video playback" in 2020, as well as support a range of mapping and texting apps accumulated in a dedicated version of the App Store.

Apple's ARKit is already one of the best augmented reality engines around.

In his interview with Nikkei, Catcher CEO Allen Horng said that his company is now working on an AR device, but stopped short of specifically naming Apple.

In a recent earnings call, he said: "We're already seeing things that will transform the way you work, play, connect and learn". Startup Meta has developed a headset with a focus on education and medical uses.

Apple publicly demoed a number of odd and exciting augmented reality apps created with its new ARKit developer framework over the last few months.

Just as tvOS powers the Apple TV, macOS runs on Macs and watchOS runs on Apple Watches, "rOS" will power Apple's AR headset. Apple's use of full-faced devices such as the HTC Vive suggests that instead of trying to tackle the hard and expensive problem of lightfield technology Apple may simply be going for a simpler passthrough system where the only challenge would be to improve latency to an acceptable level.
