Suspect facing terrorism charges in Edmonton truck attack investigated in 2015

Officers said pending charges included terrorism and five counts of attempted murder, but they did not reveal his name.

"At the end of that exhaustive investigation, there was insufficient evidence to pursue terrorism charges or a peace bond", Degrand said at an Edmonton news conference on Sunday.

Canada defended its immigration and refugee vetting system on Monday after a Somali immigrant, who had drawn scrutiny for his alleged extremist views, was charged with attempted murder for a weekend auto and knife attack that injured five.

Sharif's bail hearing was delayed until Tuesday but police released a photo of Sharif taken after his capture, showing a young man gazing directly at the camera, a large bruise on his forehead.

Edmonton police Chief Rod Knecht has said the events of Saturday night appear to have been the work of a single person.

A driver of a Chevy Malibu rammed the auto into a police officer handling crowd control outside Commonwealth Stadium.

"A male, believed to be 30 years of age, then jumped out of his vehicle and began viciously stabbing the officer with a knife, as a struggle ensued", the statement added.

A few hours later, a U-Haul van was stopped at an impaired driving check stop north of downtown on Wayne Gretzky Drive. "It's not critical, " Knecht said of the injuries.

Chernyk was cut on his face and had abrasions on his arms, but is expected to make a full recovery.

EPS said a tactical maneuver managed to get the truck to roll, and police arrested the suspect.

Of the four pedestrians, two suffered head injuries including a skull fracture.

Witness Pat Hannigan told reporters he saw police pull the man from the windshield of the toppled U-Haul van.

Police said that at this time, the events in Edmonton appear to be isolated.

Footage shows them both getting to their feet and the driver running across the street while the officer slowly follows behind him into traffic. They then used a stun gun on the driver and took him into custody. Two had been released from hospital as of Sunday afternoon.

Investigators determined at that time that he did not pose a threat.

Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said it would be wrong to blame the attack on any alleged shortcomings or failures in Canada's immigration and refugee vetting system.

Mr Sharif had been known to police for believing in extremist ideology.

The Regina Police Service and the Saskatchewan RCMP, along with other police services across the country, expressed concern for the Edmonton officer and others who were injured in Saturday's attack.

"No shots were fired".
