Richard Branson To Invest In Elon Musk's Hyperloop One

"Ever since our creation, Virgin has been known for disruption and investing in innovative companies", said Branson in a blog post.

Branson, who described the endeavor as the world's most revolutionary train service, said that as a train owner (his company owns a train network in the United Kingdom in addition to an airline and other ventures), he felt this is something he wants to be able to operate.

By using magnetic levitation and electric propulsion to accelerate a pod through a tube at near-vacuum, hyperloop hopefuls believe they can transport passengers at speeds up to 700 miles per hour, providing airline speeds on the ground.

The airline mogul announced that the highly-anticipated train service would come following a sizable investment from Virgin Airlines, although the exact amount injected into the project is unknown as of now.

Its tracks use magnetic levitation and the pod glides at airline speeds for long distances.

The technology for Hyperloop One is now in the early stages of commercialisation, after the successful completion of the first full-scale hyperloop systems test.

He said: "Projected journey times in the United Kingdom include Edinburgh to London in 50 minutes".

Virgin Group already has a hand in space travel through its Virgin Galactic spaceflight company, and now the group is investing in high-speed transportation. "From our airlines to our trains to our spaceline, we have always been passionate about innovation in transport too, especially the development of technology that could transform people's lives".

But in order to build an operational system in the short timespan Hyperloop wants to achieve, it not only has to prove the technology is capable of safely reaching the super-fast speeds Hyperloop One proclaims it can hit.

'This is just the latest example'. Virgin Hyperloop One will also be all-electric. Branson attended and said he saw "firsthand the exciting technology being tested".
