Policemen Killed In Clashes With Terrorists In Egypt

Authorities are fighting the Egyptian branch of the self-styled Islamic State terrorist group, which has increased its attacks in the north of the Sinai peninsula more than 500 kilometers (300 miles) away from the latest violence.

In a statement released on Friday evening, Hasm claimed responsibility for killing 28 members of the country's police and security forces and wounding 32 others.

Earlier reports said that 14 police officers were killed and eight others were injured during the clashes.

The statement said national security forces had received information that "terrorists" were in the desert to "hide, train, equip, and carry out terrorist operations, taking advantage of the rugged desert and ease of movement".

It was one of the largest losses of life for Egyptian security forces since militants began targeting government forces after the Islamist president Mohammed Morsi was removed by the military in 2013. Clashes erupted when they tried to arrest them and they exchanged fire.

The Associated Press news agency quoted an Egyptian security official as saying the exchange of gunfire occurred in al-Wahat al-Bahriya, a district in the Giza governorate, about 135km from Cairo.

The Defence Secretary, Sir Michael Fallon , said Jones, dubbed the " White Widow ", was a "legitimate target". In 2016, she was accused of encouraging ISIS sympathisers to launch attacks during the holy month of Ramadan.

The fighters also used explosive devices in the attack, the sources said, adding that 16 officers died in the shoot-out and the number was expected to rise.

No militant group immediately claimed involvement in the firefight.

Hundreds of police and army personnel have been killed since then. The Muslim Brotherhood denies the charge.

The militant group staging the insurgency pledged allegiance to ISIS in 2014.
