Hamas, Fatah Reach Palestinian Reconciliation Deal In Cairo

But last month Hamas agreed to cede powers in Gaza to President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah-backed government in a deal mediated by Egypt.

"Fatah and Hamas reached an agreement at dawn today upon a generous Egyptian sponsorship", Haniyeh said in a statement.

The two factions, the same source continued, had also agreed to allow a legal and administrative committee, drawn up earlier in Ramallah, to find solutions to longstanding problems - mostly related to salary shortfalls - faced by Gaza's Hamas-hired civil servants.

The accord will see the consensus government officially take full administrative control of Gaza by December 1, according to a statement issued by Egypt's state media center.

According to one Palestinian official, Abbas may soon visit the blockaded Gaza Strip - for the first time in ten years - in light of the diplomatic success in Cairo.

"All the measures taken recently will end very shortly", Zakaria al-Agha, a senior Fatah leader in the Gaza Strip, told AFP.

Abbas has tried numerous times without success to fix the rift, in part to counter Israeli assertions that peace negotiations are pointless because he can't ensure that any treaty will also hold in Gaza.

Erdogan Says Turkey-Backed Militants in New Operation in Syria's Idlib
Erdogan said Turkey would not desert civilians in Idlib and would not allow a "terror corridor" in northern Syria. The agreement came despite Russian Federation and Iran backing President Assad and Turkey wanting him gone.

In a press statement, Egypt expressed its deep appreciation to the Fatah and Hamas movements for the positive spirit of the two delegations which led to reaching this agreement.

Security cooperation between Fatah and Hamas could include, among other things, the deployment of 3,000 Fatah security officers, who would join the Gaza police force over a period of 12 months.

In return, Cairo pressed Hamas to move forward on reconciliation with Fatah.

Thousands of Palestinians took to the streets across Gaza on Thursday in celebration of the unity pact, with loudspeakers on open cars blasting national songs, youths dancing and hugging, and many waving Palestine and Egyptian flags.

Since then, the relations between the two rival factions have been very tense and all attempts to reconcile them over the past years have failed to bring fruit.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wrote on Facebook that any reconciliation deal must make Hamas disarm and "end its war to destroy Israel".
