UN Chief Antonio Guterres Urges Myanmar to Give the Rohingya Legal Status

Last October, Rohingya insurgents attacked police, setting off an army operation that targeted Rohingya villagers.

Erdogan said that escalating in human rights violations against Rohingya Muslims causes great concern in the world and Muslim countries, state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

"Many more children in need of support and protection remain in the areas of northern Rakhine State that have been wracked by violence", he said in a statement, adding that the United Nations refugee agency had no access to trouble spots in northern Rakhine state.

Aung San Suu Kyi spent years in house arrest after she stood up to Myanmar's brutal dictatorship, earning her a reputation as a beacon of democracy and a Nobel Peace Prize.

The Rohingya Muslim ethnic minority in Rakhine has faced systematic persecution for decades at the hands of Myanmar's Buddhist majority, who consider a lot of them to be illegal immigrants from neighboring Bangladesh.

In her first comments on Myanmar's latest Rohingya crisis, de-facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi says her government is protecting everyone in Rakhine state.

Suu Kyi has been under mounting global pressure to halt violence against Rohingya Muslims that has sent almost 125,000 of them fleeing over the border to Bangladesh in just over 10 days.

"We believe that together we can work to make sure that terrorism is not allowed to take root on our soil".

The Myanmar's president Htin Kyaw and Suu Kyi had visited India past year. He had visited the country in 2014 to attend the ASEAN-India Summit.

That decision has drawn criticism from rights groups and prompted a petition in the Supreme Court to stop the government from doing so. He is expected to raise the issue of the exodus of the ethnic Rohingyas into neighbouring countries.

When asked if the violence could be described as ethnic cleansing, Guterres told reporters on Tuesday: 'We are facing a risk, I hope we don't get there'.

India is trying to boost economic ties with resource-rich Myanmar, with which it shares a 1,600-km (1,000-mile) border, to counter Chinese influence and step up links with a country it considers its gateway to Southeast Asia.
