TN student who fought against NEET kills self

The PMK leader said he was not able to understand as to why Anita who took up the cause of rural students against NEET would commit suicide.

Ariyalur: Plus-2 topper Anitha's dream of becoming a medical practitioner to serve the poor was brutally cut short on Friday when she hanged herself at her home here after failing to make it to a medical college due to the Neet fiasco. Her father is a daily wage labourer.

Recalling Anitha's visit to the DMK headquarters, where she submitted a representation signed in her blood to him opposing the NEET, Mr. Stalin said she had fallen prey to the "secret understanding" between the State government and the Centre.

Her death united Tamil Nadu's opposition parties in condemning the Chief Minister K. Palaniswami government and also the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government. She had already got admission to engineering college, but she wanted to become a doctor. But last month, the Supreme Court held that MBBS/BDS admissions should be on the basis of NEET after the attorney general of India made a U-turn and informed the court that the Special Ordinance for exempting the state from NEET was not legally valid.

Hailing from a village in the Ariyalur district, around 300 kilometers from here, she was the daughter of a laborer.

The Supreme Court last year had exempted Tamil Nadu from NEET, but refused a request to continue the exemption this year too. He also blamed the State and Central Governments for Anitha's suicide.

PV Sindhu enters first final of World Badminton Championship
Saina ran away with the first game at 21-12 in a rather spirited manner in the semi-final of the World championship in Glasgow . Not ready to give up, Okuhara fell back on her extraordinary net game to save three game points.

TNCC president Su Thirunavukkarasar said that Health Minister C. Vijaya Baskar should resign, owning responsibility for the death of Anitha.

He said the government should have offered her counselling to come out of her depression.

The state government had passed two legislations seeking exemption from Neet in February and these were pending before the Union government since then.

Radhakrishnan, however, argued that the Supreme Court's order should not be seen as a success or failure of the individual or the state or the Centre. The state government is yet to release the break-up of state and other board students who had got admissions based on NEET.
