Rian Johnson Doesn't Think He Will Direct Star Wars: Episode IX

Though many predicted that Star Wars: Episode IX would end up with The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, it seems like Lucasfilm has made a decision to have the sequel trilogy come together full circle with Abrams directing as well as co-writing alongside Chris Terrio.

Abrams will helm "Star Wars: Episode IX" after he launched the current iteration of "Star Wars" films with 2015's box office hit "The Force Awakens".

Huge, huge news on the Star Wars front today - there has been a ton of speculation about who might take over the final film in the new trilogy since Colin Trevorrow was reported leaving the project. While the obvious choice to replace Trevorrow would be The Last Jedi's Rian Johnson, the director appears to be distancing himself from the project as much as possible.

It's been less than a week since Colin Trevorrow exited Episode IX, and a replacement director ha yet to be announced.

Announcing Trevorrow's departure recently, they said: "Lucasfilm and Colin Trevorrow have mutually chosen to part ways on "Star Wars: Episode IX". It grossed $2.06 billion worldwide, making it the third highest-grossing film of all time. Might you be coming to the rescue of Episode IX, given that you already know your way around a Star Wars movie and all the actors involved?

A recent report detailed why Trevorrow, as well as former Han Solo directors Lord and Miller, no longer work for Disney and Lucasfilm.

Unfortunately for fans of his work, Johnson is not now expected to have any involvement in Episode IX whatsoever.

Abrams will be completing the sequel trilogy by directing and co-writing the film with Chris Terrio. Johnson's name had been mentioned by sources close to Lucasfilm as a potential candidate to direct Episode IX, which is still scheduled to begin shooting early next year.
