Raging Rivers Of Mud Flood Puerto Rico As Deadly Hurricane Maria Hits

The last Category 4 storm to hit the Puerto Rico was in 1932.

The Category 4-storm, with winds of 155 miles per hour (250 kph), tore off roofs and sent doors flying off their hinges.

Hurricane Maria has intensified into an extremely unsafe Category 4 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson wind scale and is expected to strengthen further, the US National Hurricane Centre says.

US Virgin Islands Governor Kenneth Mapp said Maria would pass within 16 km of St Croix, which has a population of 55,000 and escaped the wrath of Hurricane Irma.

Credit: GOES EAST, NOAA Currently, hurricane-force winds extend 15 miles (30 km) from the eye of the storm, while tropical storm-force winds extend 125 miles (205 km) from the center, the NHC reported.

On that path the center of the hurricane will cross right over Puerto Rico and will move off the northern coast in a few hours.

Puerto Rico is home to roughly 3.3 million people, a number of which took shelter from the storm in emergency shelters.

Forecasts show Hurricane Maria approaching the islands Tuesday night and Wednesday.
