Mueller also wants more information on campaign officials including embattled former campaign chief Paul Manafort.

Mueller has also requested documents about the circumstances of the firing of Michael T. Flynn, who was Trump's first national security adviser. Additionally, they are looking at how the White House responded to a Trump Tower meeting between Donald Trump Jr and a Russian lawyer in June 2016. It was the day after Trump fired Comey, and the decision to meet with Russians at that time and in that context was bad enough.

White House attorney Ty Cobb told CNN that "out of respect for special counsel and his process", the White House does not comment on its communications with the special counsel.

The Times asserted that the document requests show that several aspects of his probe "are focused squarely on Mr. Trump's behavior".

Of the 13 subjects in Mueller's document request, four are related to Flynn.

US officials said Flynn had told the vice president that he had only exchanged holiday greetings with Kislyak, when in fact the two men had discussed economic sanctions against Russian Federation.

Photo Russia's official news agency photographed President Trump's meeting with Sergey V. Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, in the Oval Office in May.

In January, White House counsel Don McGahn was briefed by then-Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates that Mr Flynn could be susceptible to blackmail by the Russian government. It was revealed earlier this month that Trump and aide Stephen Miller had drafted, but not sent, an earlier memo that sought to justify Comey's firing. Comey in later testimony claimed that the president had repeatedly entreated him to "let go" of the investigation into Flynn before ultimately dismissing him in May.

The Russia investigation just took a major leap forward-straight into the Oval Office.

In May, Rosenstein penned a memo criticizing then-FBI Director James Comey's handling of the investigation in Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server during her time as secretary of state.
