The accident will increase scrutiny of the religious schools known as tahfiz, where many Muslim Malays send their children to study the Koran but which are not regulated by education authorities and often operate illegally.

The Fire Department said earlier that at least 25 were killed in the fire which broke out at around 5.41 a.m, BBC reported.

The youngest was just seven, media said. Also, the officials suspect that an electric short circuit took place at the boarding school.

Khirudin said the department believed there were other elements outside the building which caused the fire and a thorough investigation was going on.

Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Amar Singh said numerous victims were trapped inside the dormitory, which had only one entrance, and probably suffocated. But he said a wall had been built dividing that floor, leaving only one exit for the dorm.

"They were sent to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital for treatment", he said.

"But because of the grills, they could not escape".

He said the premises had been only temporary but those running the school should nevertheless have followed safety requirements.
