Angels get slugging OF Justin Upton in deal with Tigers

Outfielder Justin Upton is headed to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in an August trade.

And with the Twins dealing with a hamate injury to outfielder Byron Buxton, who has helped propel them to second-half relevance and the wild card spot they have a tenuous hold on, now is the time for the Angels to upgrade.

Thursday is the final day that Major League Baseball teams can complete waiver trades and have the players involved available to play in the postseason.

Upton, who is 30-years-old, struggled a bit in his first season with the Detroit Tigers, batting just.246 in 153 games, though he was able to hit 31 home runs and collect 87 RBIs.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Astros have acquired Cameron Maybin from the Angels.

Upton, who started his career with the Diamondbacks, can opt out of his deal after the season, but reports indicate he has not guaranteed that he won't opt out.

The Los Angeles Angels have made the playoffs only once since Mike Trout and Albert Pujols joined their lineup six seasons ago.

While this is mostly a salary dump for the rebuilding Tigers, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN says they'll be getting pitcher Grayson Long from the Angels and potentially more. They finally get Josh Hamilton's massive contract off their books after this season, and should Upton have a change of heart and opt-in to the remaining four years of his deal his $88.5 million would essentially replace Hamilton's. He would have been displaced by Upton joining the Angels. He will be making $28 million each of the next two seasons, after which he has a $22 million option for the 2020 season that vests if he finishes in the top 5 of Cy Young voting in 2019.
