5.6-magnitude quake detected in N.Korea

South Korea's presidential office said it will hold a National Security Council meeting chaired by President Moon Jae-in.

He said New Zealand would join the global community in considering what measures can be taken.

Japan and South Korea recorded major tremors from a device designed for a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) and several times more powerful than an atomic bomb.

Pyongyang has today claimed it has successfully conducted a test of a hydrogen bomb meant to be loaded into an intercontinental ballistic missile.

The latest test is likely to again increase tensions between the USA and North Korea. The report came just days after a Trump administration ban on travel by Americans to North Korea took effect.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was quick to express condemnation.

Juche is North Korea's homegrown ruling ideology that is a combination of Marxism and extreme nationalism preached by state founder Kim Il Sung, the current leader's grandfather. That would be 3:30 Seoul and Tokyo, and 2:30 a.m. EDT.

Previous recent tremors in the region have been caused by nuclear tests.

It has been subjected to seven rounds of United Nations Security Council sanctions over its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes, but always insists it will continue to pursue them. North Korea conducted its fifth test last September.

"It shows (North Korea) is not only threatening assured destruction of the USA and allied cities in the event it is attacked, but also that (North Korea) is considering limited coercive nuclear strikes, or is seeking credible response options for US ones".

The development comes amid heightened regional tension following launch of an intermediate-range missile by North Korea that flew over Japan.
