Trump battle for wall money squeezed by deadline for debt limit

In the midst of a series of tweets about Hurricane Harvey Sunday morning, President Donald Trump shared a reminder of his 2016 presidential victory, asserted that Mexico will pay for the border wall and threatened to terminate NAFTA renegotiations.

On CNN's "New Day" Friday, host Alisyn Camerota quoted Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto telling Trump in a phone call, "Mexico can not pay for that wall".

Mexican leaders have publicly rejected any avenue to pay for the wall.

"Let's not forget that there were a lot of Democrat senators that also voted for border security and a border fence, and hopefully some of those same individuals will talk to members in their current party, and maybe we can get a bipartisan group to support that and make sure it happens because this president is going to see it through", she said.

Trump also returned to the issue of the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA, with Canada and Mexico that Trump first vowed to end, then moved toward renegotiating. "It has to be a partnership, I have no doubt about that".

Speaking of his plan to build a wall along the Mexican border, Trump said, "If we have to close down our government, we're building that wall".

"It's only natural the president would have a discussion with administration lawyers about legal matters", White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders recently told reporters.

The Foreign Ministry said in its statement that Mexico will not negotiate NAFTA or any other aspect of the bilateral relationship "through social networks or the media".

In his Sunday morning tweet, however, Trump was back to being as braggadocios as ever.
