Tropical Depression Eight forms in Atlantic

Tropical Storm Gert is expected to be about midway between Bermuda and North Carolina on Monday and Tuesday.

As of 5 p.m. Sunday afternoon, Tropical Storm Gert was producing an area of maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour, making it a minimal tropical storm force system.

A disturbance that has been slowly making its way across the Atlantic since last week has organized and gained strength, becoming the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season's eighth tropical depression, the National Hurricane Center reports. The Invest then encountered more favorable conditions with less wind shear and dry air over the weekend, allowing it to strengthen to Depression Eight Saturday night, and then into a weak tropical storm on Sunday.

Because of this, the National Hurricane Center is not issuing any watches or warnings on Gert.

Over the next few days, Gert will move north-northwest and eventually re-curve out to the open Atlantic.
