Samsung develops industry-first LTE modem technology supporting 6CA

Samsung's Cat.18 6CA-supported LTE modem technology achieves up to 1.2 Gbps downlink speed.

Samsung on Monday announced that its next-generation mobile processors will support 6CA (carrier aggregation) LTE modem technology.

For those wondering just what they would do with that kind of network speed, Samsung offered the example of a full-length high definition movie, which it said could be downloaded in 10 seconds using the new technology. Samsung's current flagship, the Galaxy S8, was the first smartphone to come to market with an LTE modem that can hit gigabit-per-second speeds.

CA (carrier aggregation) is technology that realizes wide bandwidth by grouping multiple frequency bands into one.

Test and measurement company Anritsu is the technology partner for Samsung. It will also result in smoother video calls and live broadcasting. The technology supports 4×4 MIMO (Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output) and higher-order 256 QAM (Quadrature amplitude modulation) scheme to maximize the data transfer rate. The Korean tech giant boosted its modem capacity to support six LTE bands, increasing network performance and data transfer speed. This also means that users with Exynos-based Samsung Galaxy devices should expect similar but not equal experiences to those with Qualcomm-based Galaxy devices.

The chip will go into full production by the end of the year, guaranteeing its presence in next year's phones.

"1.2Gbps maximum downlink speed with 6CA support highlights Samsung's design capabilities and well-positions Samsung for the upcoming 5G era", said Woonhaing Hur, vice president of System LSI Protocol Development at Samsung Electronics.
