Raped 10-Year-Old Gives Birth After Law Protects Baby From Abortion

The 10-year-old rape victim, whose abortion plea was rejected by the Supreme Court on health grounds delivered a baby girl on Thursday at a Chandigarh hospital.

The girl alleged that she had been raped multiple times by her uncle over the past few months.

She is unaware that she was pregnant or that she has now had a child, with her parents explaining the operation by telling her she needed an operation for a stone in her stomach, according to NDTV. The baby weighed 2.2 kilograms (about 4.8 pounds) at birth and was moved to the neonatal intensive care unit, said Dr. Dasari Harish, who is overseeing their care. It was during the advance stages of pregnancy that the girl complained of stomach pain, which was later discovered that she was pregnant.

In a similar case this year, a court in the northern Indian state of Haryana permitted a 10-year-old girl who was 21 weeks pregnant to have an abortion after her mother alleged she was raped by her stepfather.

"If you abort then the risk to life is greater", the superintendent said.

Killed At Dragstrip Shooting South Of Milwaukee
The police said while friends of the victims were in shock after the event, they had no idea what would have led to the incident. The shooting happened about 7 p.m.at the auto racing event near Union Grove , Wis., about 25 miles south of Milwaukee.

The family, did not approach the authorities about the girl's pregnancy until the 26th or 27th week, said Alakh Alok Srivastava, a lawyer who represented the girl's family, to CNN in a previous interview. Some families of young rape victims also have made requests to the high court.

In May, a very similar case appeared before the India Supreme Court.

The parents of the 10-year old girl, are now looking for ways to put the baby up for adoption as they're anxious about the stigma.

Indian law does not permit medical terminations after 20 weeks unless there is a threat to the mother's life. The rape victim delivered the baby at around 9:22 am today via Caesarian section in the Chandigarh's Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32. The victim was allegedly raped on knife point after which the accused fled the spot. It did not ask to be born.
