Northwestern professor, Oxford staffer arrested in California for Chicago murder

An employee of Oxford University and a United States professor have been arrested over the murder of a man in Chicago on 27 July. CPD got word a short time ago that they have both been taken into custody without incident.

"We are also thankful both men are safely in custody and this did not end in further tragedy".

Both were wanted in connection with the death of Trenton Cornell-Duranleau, 26, who died after being brutally stabbed multiple times in Lathem's apartment. Lathem was booked into Alameda County Jail in Oakland and Warren was booked into San Francisco County Jail.

According to Chicago police, Lathem, a microbiology professor at Northwestern University in Chicago, knew the victim, although police did not specify the nature of their relationship.

Police said Lathem had sent a video to friends and relatives apologizing for his involvement in the crime, which he called the "biggest mistake of my life".

Wyndham Lathem, 42, a bubonic plague expert who has been an associate professor at Northwestern University since 2007, turned himself in "peacefully" to police in Oakland on Friday evening, NBC News reports.

"The U.S. Marshals in Oakland have been working throughout the week with the U.S. Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force and the Chicago Police Department", said the U.S. Marshals Service in a statement.

A US-wide police hunt was launched by Chicago Police Department for Somerville College employee Andrew Warren, 56, little over a week after he was reported missing.

Both men were wanted on charges of first-degree murder and Warren was held without bail in San Francisco County Jail as of early Saturday.

Police said that on the day of the slaying, but before the body had been discovered, Lathem and Warren drove about 80 miles northwest to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

POLICE in America say they have an "idea" where Swindon murder suspect Andrew Warren is hiding after a manhunt was launched. At the city's public library, one of the men made a $1,000 donation in Cornell-Duranleau's name.

Late last night, officers said that they had an "idea" where Mr Warren and Mr Lathem are hiding and believe they are "armed and dangerous".

"This is now a criminal matter under investigation by the appropriate authorities, and Northwestern University is cooperating in that investigation", its statement said.
