No bail for Charlottesville vehicle attack suspect James Fields

Local Charlottesville newspaper The Daily Progress reported on Monday that district Judge Robert H. Downer, Jr. assigned Charles L. "Buddy" Weber to defend Fields, who said he could not afford a lawyer. Pockets of violence erupted throughout the city as white nationalists, white supremacists and neo-nazis clashed with their detractors, igniting in a flashpoint with the vehicular attack.

A grey Dodge Charger smashed into a group of counter protesters who had descended on Charlottesville, Virginia, to push back on a white supremacist rally being held there to protest the planned removal of a Confederate monument there. The violence of the clashes between the far-right rallies and counter-protesters forced Governor of the U.S. state of Virginia Terry McAuliffe to declare a state of emergency in Charlottesville. He is being held on suspicion of second-degree murder, malicious wounding and failure to stop in an accident that resulted in death. Originally from Kentucky, Fields, moved to OH and lived in Maumee, according to the New York Times Sunday. One woman, Charlottesville resident Heather Heyer, was killed and 19 people were injured.

Fields had been photographed hours before the vehicle attack carrying the emblem of Vanguard America, one of the white supremacist hate groups that organised the "take America back" campaign sparked by the removal of a Confederate statue.

Fields was arrested shortly afterwards and taken into custody.

Some conservatives have also criticized him for granting security clearance to Susan Rice, Obama's national security adviser. Michael Waltz (Ret.) said Trump is right to be frustrated with the lack of a comprehensive strategy in Afghanistan.

During an interview with ABC News Monday morning, Attorney General Jeff Sessions confirmed those actions are considered an act of domestic terrorism under DOJ statute.

Fields was seen participating in the Unite the Right rally at Emancipation Park with Vanguard America, a known racist, right-wing group.

They also urged US President Donald Trump to forcefully denounce the organisations, some of which specifically cited Mr Trump's election after a campaign of racially charged rhetoric as validation of their beliefs. The governor says "they are Nazis and they are here to hurt American citizens, and he needs to call them out for what they are, no question".
