Campbell, who's best known for his 1975 hit, "Rhinestone Cowboy, was in a Nashville facility for Alzheimer's patients when he died Tuesday, TMZ said".

The music legend behind songs such as "Rhinestone Cowboy", "Wichita Lineman" and "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" passed away at the age of 81 on August 8, a representative for his record label Universal Music Group has confirmed to Rolling Stone magazine. He picked up the CMA Entertainer of the Year award in 1969.

As well as his musical talents, Campbell also ventured onto the big screen, starring alongside John Wayne in True Grit (1969) and most recently playing Jesse Dalton for a stint in TV series Players (1997). Rejecting the shame and secrecy that sometimes attend Alzheimer's, Campbell turned into an advocate for the disease and was staunchly public about his affliction; audiences cheered him even as he struggled to remember his lyrics on stage.
