Conrad Roy's Family Breaks Silence After Michelle Carter's Sentencing

MICHELLE Carter has been sentenced to 15 months in jail after being found guilty of persuading her teenage boyfriend to kill himself with a string of text messages. In the course of Carter's trial, it was revealed that Roy got out of the vehicle at one point, but Carter, who was 17 at the time, texted him to get back in. He pointed out that the judge could have imposed a sentence of up to 20 years if he wanted.

"This is a bad, awful tragedy and she very much regrets this", said Joseph Cataldo, requesting five years of supervised probation attached to conditions such as mental health counseling.

She has now been sentenced to 15 months in jail for involuntary manslaughter.

"I was just sick to my stomach [at] the fact that she can just be free and my cousin, he's not here".

"She gets to sleep in her own bed tonight". Roy's family told the court Thursday that they were devastated by his death. "Its always gonna be that way if u don't take action", Carter replied. He's not going to be here anymore, ' O'Donnell said. These reasons had influenced her her actions. She hasn't shown anything.

"2 1/2 years is not enough", O'Donnell said.

"No normal human being who doesn't have problems would tell someone to get back in the truck where it is a toxic environment", O'Donnell said. "I think she was responsible for his death".

A teenage sister, Camden Roy, recalled her 13 years with her older brother and said she's "haunted" by the realization she'll never see him Wednesday or be an aunt to his children.

More than 90 people have lost their lives in the protests, which could increase as Sunday's elections get closer. Maduro has called for a vote on July 30 to elect a special assembly that is to draft a new constitution.

Roy took his own life in 2014 when he was 18 by attaching a portable generator to his pickup truck.

When Roy texted Carter that "I keep regretting the past it's getting me upset", her response was: "Take your life?" and later added, "The time is right and you're ready, you just need to do it!"

The "insistent tone of Carter's text messages" drew widespread attention to the case, the AP reports. You just have to do it. "I ask of you to invoke leniency in your decision-making process for my loving child Michelle".

In response to Roy expressing trepidation about killing himself, Carter sent him a series of texts appearing to encourage him. Cataldo also argued that Carter's words amounted to free speech protected by the First Amendment.

Carter was convicted in June by a judge who said her final instruction to Conrad Roy III caused his death. The judge said those words constituted "wanton and reckless conduct" under the manslaughter statute.

The American Civil Liberties Union of MA agreed that the case against Carter was not one of manslaughter and expressed anger that the sentencing further sets a unsafe example.

The couple had met in Florida in 2012 but had only seen each other in person a handful of times. Their relationship consisted mainly of texting. The prosecutors mentioned at the trial that Michelle Carter stayed on the phone till her boyfriend died in the truck.

Roy's father, Conrad Roy Jr., said he was heartsick.
