Clinton, Missouri police officer shot and killed late Sunday night

Gary Michael, 37, who had been with the Clinton, Missouri, Police Department for less than a year, pulled over a vehicle for a suspected registration violation Sunday night, according to Sgt. Bill Lowe of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

"You know a lot of people call traffic stops routine", said Lowe, "but there isn't a routine traffic stop". The suspect drove about three blocks before crashing his vehicle and fleeing on foot. Lowe said authorities believe he is still on foot somewhere in the Clinton area.

Sergeant Martin said Mr. McCarthy's auto was found abandoned a short distance from the scene of the shooting after it hit an embankment.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says they are looking for Ian McCarthy, 39, of Clinton, in connection to the shooting.

Authorities have identified a person of interest in the fatal shooting of a Missouri police officer. "It's a tragedy for Clinton Police Department, but it's a tragedy for this community", Lowe told the station. Lowe says Michael was "heroic right to the end". He is wanted for questioning in the death late Sunday of 37-year-old Clinton police officer Gary Michael.
