Injured are helped on a long stretch of pedestrian sidewalk after a white van jumped the sidewalk. Spanish media have named Moussa Oubakir, 18, as the suspect.

The attack was the deadliest in Spain since 2004, when al Qaeda-inspired militants detonated bombs on Madrid's subway system, killing 191 and injuring more than 1,800.

"All that we've been told is that she is in a serious condition, she has got multiple fractures everywhere - arms, legs, severe facial injuries".

Of the eight Australians impacted by events in Barcelona, Ms Bishop said four were injured, three required consular support and one is unaccounted for.

Regional head Carles Puigdemont said people had been flocking to hospitals in Barcelona to give blood.

The company wrote: "Rest in peace Bruno, we will remember you forever".
