Apple Is Scaling Back Ambitions on Its Self-Driving Car

It reportedly plans to test the tech by building a self-driving shuttle (called PAIL, for Palo Alto to Infinite Loop) that will take employees between its current campus and the new "Spaceship" HQ. Following a debate on whether the company should produce a fully or partially autonomous vehicle, Titan was eventually reined in, with emphasis put on software and systems, while staff was reduced. The move comes after the tech giant made a decision to abandon the idea of building an entire self-driving vehicle by itself.

It's no secret Apple wants to build self-driving auto technology.

In July 2016, the Special Projects team was reorganized under a new leader, Bob Mansfield.

The new test vehicles will probably be commercial vehicles from a partner automaker outfitted with Apple's autonomous system, according to the report. The daily noted that Apple, as always focused on clean designs, wanted to do away with the awkward cone. Instead, the company has pivoted to focus on the software side.

It seemed everything was going well for Apple in their pursuit of creating the next big thing- future Model-T, only for Tim Cook to say to Bloomberg earlier this year that Apple is now focusing on autonomous systems and are working on the underlying technology behind self-driving cars and not an Apple branded vehicle. The Times said Apple's pivot after years of work on the so-called Project Titan came after complications caused by the sheer size of the self-driving-car project and lack of a clear vision for the end product. This aligns Apple with most other companies working on self-driving technology. Time will tell if Apple will be the one to make that revolution happen. "It's a core technology that we view as very important".

Steve Zadesky, an executive who was initially in charge of Titan, wanted to pursue the semiautonomous option.

The disputes didn't stop there, according to the five unnamed Apple insiders, the next one was over whether self-driving software should be programmed in Apple's own programming language Swift, or the industry standard, C++.

According to the source that Business Insider spoke with, Apple is creating its autonomous systems with an eye to the ride-sharing and ride-hailing market but that Apple has no plans at this point to go it alone and try to become the next Uber.

Even though had not ironed out numerous basics, like how the autonomous systems would work, a team had already started working on an operating system software called CarOS.
