After Terror Attack, Barcelona Wins La Liga Opening Match Against Real Betis

Barcelona have dedicated their opening day La Liga victory over Real Betis to the victims of last week's terror attacks in the Catalan capital.

Barcelona's Argentinian forward Lionel Messi kicks the ball during the second leg of the Spanish Supercup football match Real Madrid vs FC Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid.

On the other side, the defending champions, Real Madrid also emerged victorious against Deportivo La Coruna with a score that stood at 3-0.

"While Barcelona's focus has been away from footballing matters, they go into the match in far from ideal shape on the pitch". I played in my favoured midfield position.

This gesture has received and express approval by the authorities of the Royal Federation of Spanish Football.

The decision for the match to go ahead with increased security measures put in place was part of a desire to "recover normality" in the words of Catalonia's president Carles Puigdemont.

Following the awful events of last Thursday afternoon, it was always going to be a hard occasion with a sombre mood in the Camp Nou. The attacks clearly had an impact with only 56, 480 fans turning up for the match.

On the field, Barca have had a awful start to the season as shorn of Neymar following his world record 222 million euro ($261 million) move to Paris Saint-Germain, the Catalans were swept aside 5-1 on aggregate by Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup.

"They are extraordinary and lamentable circumstances", said Valverde on Saturday.

Mascherano's tackle was superb, but Gerard Deulofeu also played a key role in both Barca goals.

Players posted their own messages of support on social media in the aftermath of the attack, while they also held a minute's silence before training on Friday.

Barca headed into proceedings this evening without the recently-departed Neymar and sidelined Luis Suarez, leaving a hitherto unseen front three of Lionel Messi, Paco Alcacer and Gerard Deulofeu to lead the line for the home side.

The hosts eventually broke the deadlock in the 36th minute when Deulofeu delivered a low cross into Messi, although the Argentine's shot was deflected into the net by Betis' Tosca.
