World Leaders Attend Memorial Event For Former German Chancellor Kohl

The coffin of former German chancellor Helmut Kohl was seen off on Saturday with military honours outside the Speyer Cathedral before it headed off to his last resting place at a nearby cemetery.

Kohl, who died June 16 at the age of 87, is the first person to be honoured with an official memorial event by the European Union.

Drawing on his friendships with several world leaders, often forged over hearty meals, Kohl assured the Allied nations that had beaten Nazi Germany in World War II that his country no longer aspired to dominate others.

He will be buried in the German town of Speyer later in the day.

It is the first time that the European Parliament has paid tribute to a leader in such a way. "Rest in peace. Now it's upon us to keep your legacy". "I bow before you and your memory in gratitude and humility", she said.

Former US president Bill Clinton also delivered a eulogy.

"You did well to achieve that during your lifetime and those of us who experienced it love you for it". "Bigger than our terms of office, bigger than our fleeting careers", he said.

Speakers at the ceremony include the current German and French leaders Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron, respectively, as well as Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, former U.S. President Bill Clinton, and former Spanish President Felipe González.

At his widow's request, there will be no state funeral in Germany.

And if it's been conducted with such a sense of ceremony it's because the new leaders of Europe - especially Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel - want to capture and distil something of Mr Kohl's spirit, which worked to such effect a quarter of a century ago.

It was taken by helicopter on to his birthplace in Ludwigshafen, being carried in a procession and then transported to Speyer Cathedral along the Rhine for a Catholic requiem to be attended by 1,500 mourners.

European leaders paid tribute to Helmut Kohl, vowing to live up to the German's unflagging efforts to work for European unity at a time when many voters across the continent have expressed their doubts.

More than 2,000 police are on duty in Strasbourg.

In an interview on the weekly Die Zeit website, Walter Kohl criticised the lack of national funeral services, which were refused by his stepmother Maike Kohl-Richter.

On Friday, Kohl's son Walter called the plans for his father's funeral "unworthy" of a man considered the father of German reunification, further inflaming a family feud with his stepmother.
