RIP Martin Landau, Oscar-winning actor has died at age 89

In a statement, Dick Guttman, a publicist for Mr. Landau, said the actor died of "unexpected complications", but did not provide additional details.

He made his Broadway debut in 1957's Middle of the Night and appeared on film for the first time in Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest in 1959.

He received the Academy Award for Burton's "Ed Wood" (1994), in which he had an impassioned supporting turn as the Hungarian-born, heroin-addicted, aging horror-film actor Bela Lugosi.

His performance as Rollin Hand on Mission Impossible earned him a Golden Globe Award and nominations for three Emmy Awards.

Landau, won an Oscar for playing Bela Lugosi in the movie "Ed Wood,". Landau is agonised, self-questioning and vulnerable, at once a kind of damaged father figure to Tucker and yet also perhaps someone who lets him down, like an errant son. Years later, he taught at the group's second location, in West Hollywood, CA, the Actors Studio West.

Actor Martin Landau arrives for the European premiere of the film "Frankenweenie" at the Odeon Leicester Square in central London October 10, 2012.

'I would've probably died playing that role. Opportunity knocked in 1977 with a leading role in the British sci-fi series Space: 1999, but Landau found himself again out of steady work when the series was abruptly canceled two years later.

After all, Landau's roller-coaster career included credits like The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island. He is survived by his daughters Susie and Juliet from his marriage to Bain, sister Elinor, granddaughter Aria and godson Dylan.

He and Bain divorced, and Landau spent the '80s in roles in mostly obscure films.
