NIMA ROOZ: Faryab's Kohistan District Falls To The Taliban

Mohammad Mustafa Mohseni, the provincial police chief of Ghor Province, said Taywara district fell late on July 22 following clashes with militants.

But some officials said they suspected the Taliban had kidnapped or killed them for suspected cooperation with the Western-backed government which the terrorists are striving to topple.

"Aerial fires resulted in the deaths of the friendly Afghan forces who were gathered in a compound", U.S. forces said. Officials said the district collapsed after heavy fighting at about 2 a.m.

The Taliban, in a statement to the media, announced the capture of Taywara district headquarters.

The Associated Press reported the Taliban launched four assaults on the district headquarters early Sunday, pushing forces from the compound.

Ahmad Faisal Bigzad says another 20 members of a local police force in the remote region of Tagab are missing following Friday's firefight.

"There is a fear that the neighboring districts might also fall to the Taliban if the central government doesn't send enough troops and weapons soon", Fazal Haq Ihsan, head of the provincial council, told Stars and Stripes.

The Taliban abducted 70 people on Friday from their houses in a village along the Kandahar-Tarinkot highway in Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province.

Lying south of the Taliban's birthplace Kandahar, Helmand produces the lion's share of opium the country produces, and remains one of the most insecure provinces in Afghanistan, with the militants controlling large swaths of land.

The Taliban had held Nawa for nine months.

The friendly fire incident, now under investigation, happened during a US-supported Afghan National Defense and Security Forces operation that aimed to go after militants in Gereshk district, US Forces-Afghanistan said. More than 10 percent of Afghanistan's 407 districts were under insurgent control or influence, while 33 percent were contested.

At the start of this year's fighting season, the Afghan government controlled less than 60 percent of the country, according to US military assessments.
