Monsoon session of Parliament: Opposition looks to corner government over several issues

The Monsoon session of Parliament for 2017 is all set to begin on Monday, July 17, and the Opposition parties have a number of issues in their kitty that they plan to raise in order to corner the BJP-led NDA government in general and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in particular.

Mrs Mahajan condemned the terror attack on Amarnath Yatri and expressed grief over the deaths in the attack.

Azad said security situation was at its "worst" in Kashmir where the government has closed all the doors for talks to end the current logjam. During the briefing, he said GST stands for "Going Stronger Together". He said opposition parties will seek a discussion on the India-China standoff in Dokalam.

"The Congress will demand inclusion of petroleum, electricity and real estate in the GST", Surjewala said.

CPI-M leader Mohammad Salim said apart from issues concerning tension on the border, his party will raise the issue of mob lynching and the agrarian crisis. The Prime Minister also urged all leaders to achieve consensus on celebrating the 75th anniversary of Quit India Movement on August 9 in both Houses of Parliament.

To counter the opposition's onslaught, the government is also gearing up. A total of 18 bills has been listed for passage in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

The Prime Minister also called on all the parties to support the war against corruption, which has been initiated by the government.

The bills which are important from an economic perspective include the Banking Regulation (Amendment) Bill, 2017; the Whistle Blowers Protection (Amendment) Bill, 2015 and the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2017.

PM Modi, who arrived in the Lok Sabha about five minutes before house proceedings began for the monsoon session, also greeted Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi and the party's MP Jyotiraditya Scindia.
