Maitama Sule: Kano declares Tuesday public holiday

The statement, signed by N. A. Shariff, said: "With a sorrowful heart, we announce the death of Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Sule, Danmasanin Kano this morning".

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the late elder statesman, Alhaji Maitama Sule, as a progressive voice who made the country proud in all assignments he undertook for the country, locally and internationally.

He extended his deep and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, associates and the government of Kano state, praying that the Almighty God comforts all.

While describing him as a national asset, Mr. Osinbajo said Nigerians home and away will miss the huge contribution of Mr. Sule for the forseeable future.

Governor Sani Bello eulogized the deceased describing him as a highly detribalised Nigerian who, in various capacities, fought for the unity, peace and progress of the country since independence.

Alhaji Sule was born in 1929 in Kano. Sule's sojourn into Nigerian Politics began in 1976 after he became the Federal Commissioner of public complaints.

He said the deceased's well-researched and excellently delivered speeches inspired and impressed several Nigerians, including him (Osinbajo).

The Acting President, on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari, the Government and the people of Nigeria, conveyed heartfelt condolences over the loss of "a great national asset". "We pray that Allah grants his soul eternal rest".
