Karnataka state to have its own flag?

Last month, the Congress party-led state government constituted a nine-member panel, including bureaucrats and academics, to advice on the legality of the issue and also suggest a design for the state flag.

The Karnataka government has formed a 9-member panel to look into the demand of a separate official flag for the state.

India as a nation having its national flag can not and must not allow separate flags for states, which will be definitely against integrity of nation.

It is a measure of the lack of constructive attitude of the Karnataka government that with elections to the State assembly less than an year away, there is no scramble on the part of the Siddaramaiah government to show results in improving the lot of the people but an attempt to stir up emotive issues.

The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), the main opposition party in the state, does not support a separate flag for Karnataka. The order nominated the principal secretary of the Kannada and culture department as chairperson of the committee, according to TOI. In a statement by K'taka CM, he said, "As the Constitution does not bar states from having their own flag for a separate identity, we will consider it if the panel recommends".

BJP MP Shobha Karandlaje said that the move by the Siddharamaiah Government was unacceptable and rather the national stands for unity and for "one nation, one flag".

"We have an unofficial state anthem for Karnataka".

Asked if there was anything in the constitution that barred a state from having a flag, Jayachandra said there was no mention about states in the three Acts. "It is meant only for Karnataka and is not given any official recognition by the Constitution or the judiciary", he said.

The national flag will always be higher than the state flag, he added. "We will take a decision after discussing it thoroughly", he said.

Siddaramaiah, on the other hand, has rejected speculation that the move was aimed at Assembly elections and dared the BJP to openly oppose the move. She had said in the report to Rao that there was "a talk" that Rs two crore had exchanged hands and that there were allegations against him (Rao) as well. "The Congress government is using this issue to divert attention from some recent controversies", he said. Currently, Jammu and Kashmir, which has special status under Article 370 of the Constitution, is the only state in the country that has the permission to have its own flag. They also say that state flags can become symbols of separatism and threaten India's unity and integrity.
