Evacuation order due to Detwiler Fire lifted for town of Mariposa

As of Thursday, the 70,000-acre Detwiler Fire, about 30 miles from Yosemite, has so far destroyed 45 homes and 40 other structures in the outskirts of the nearby town of Mariposa, Calif., since it started July 16.

The fire is 15 percent contained.

On Friday, multiple evacuation orders and road closures were lifted, including the main town area of Mariposa, with businesses and residents excited to return to their lives. The power supply for Yosemite Valley in the national park is also threatened as the transmission lines are in the direct path of the fast-moving blaze.

The fire came within 50 miles of Yosemite on Friday, but was not growing toward the park, Cal Fire's Isolano said.

Officials 1,500 houses remain at risk.

Meanwhile, in Montana, officials said that a 19-year-old firefighter was killed on Wednesday when part of a tree fell on him while he was combating the so-called Florence Fire north of Seeley Lake.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. "This fire has really devastated the area". It is 10 percent contained.

Firefighters continue to battle against the Detwiler fire in Mariposa, California.

After expanded by more than 22,000 acres overnight, the fire's progress slowed on Thursday, taking only 500 acres during the day, Cal Fire said.

The fire closed one of several roads into the park during its busy summer season, and rangers warned visitors with respiratory problems to be mindful of the smoky haze over the park's landmark Half Dome rock face, Gediman said.

Holiman says the firefighters will work to protect structures that are in the fire's path. But that has increased the challenge for crews battling flames feeding on dense vegetation. Jerry Brown, the Californian governor, declared an emergency.
