Chicago police, feds team up on new effort to curb violence

During his presidential campaign, Donald Trump occasionally made mention of the gun violence Chicago continuously endures, and he said he would be the one to help reduce the city's murder rate by "send (ing) in the feds" in order "to fix the awful carnage".

Trump's tweet comes after authorities confirmed to The Chicago-Sun Times reported that Trump had sent twenty agents from U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to the city.

The new Chicago agents will use the bureau's gun tracking technology to solve crimes and track illegal weapons, officials said.

The idea of a new strike force was reportedly born last November, and in March, a police official met with Attorney General Jeff Sessions in Washington, discuss how to proceed.

Months after taking to Twitter to say he would send in "the Feds" to help reduce Chicago's murder rate, President Trump's administration has sent in agents to combat the ongoing violence.

The president, who in January decried the high crime rate in the third most populous US city as "carnage", did not specify what type of help he planned to send.

Collins, the spokesperson for Mayor Emanuel, said the progress Chicago Police have made this year "happened without any of the new resources from the federal government we requested". Roughly 40 ATF agents have already been working with local and state police on reducing gun violence in the city.

US President Donald Trump has made a decision to send federal troops to Chicago to help fight street violence and drug trafficking.

Superintendent Eddie Johnson said in a statement Thursday night that "we are foundationally changing the way we fight crime in Chicago". It is critical for the people of Chicago's public safety that we begin to work together here and deport violent criminals that have been convicted.

Though Chicago is not among the nation's most violent cities on a per capita basis, Trump has repeatedly singled out the city for its appalling gun violence statistics.

State police, intelligence analysts and state and federal prosecutors will target illegal guns and repeat gun offenders.
