3-month-old killer whale dies at SeaWold San Antonio

Theme park officials said Kyara died early Monday morning from a likely case of pneumonia. SeaWorld had the opportunity to allow Takara to give birth in a seaside sanctuary but instead chose to make a buck off the birth.

Kyara is shown with her mother Takara, who was born at SeaWorld San Diego in July 1991.

Kyara, the last killer whale born in captivity died Monday, SeaWorld of San Antonio announced.

No other whales in her pod have shown signs of infection, SeaWorld said, adding that pneumonia is "one of the most common causes of morbidity or illness in whales and dolphins, both in the wild and in aquariums".

"Additionally, the team was hand-feeding her in an effort to ensure she received the nutrition she needed". "In addition to monitoring her 24/7, the expert veterinary staff was treating her with antimicrobials, including antibiotics, for any infections she was fighting". And in early 2016 SeaWorld announced they would stop their breeding program, though they still keep and display several orcas in the parks.

The tourists are believed to be from the Ukraine and the incident took place in the Red Sea resort of Hurghada. The Ministry of Interior released a statement saying that six tourists were injured.

SeaWorld had come under fire for how killer whales have been treated at its three parks.

The plan is for their performances to be phased out by 2019, with a program of more "natural orca encounters" for guests, going forward.

Two of the deaths happened at SeaWorld Orlando, a man who trespassed into the park and Tilikum's trainer Dawn Brancheau who was killed in 2010.

SeaWorld, which has not captured a wild orca in more than 40 years, now has 22 orcas left in the United States.

The next youngest, Amaya, was born in late December 2014.
