3 dead in Gardendale identified, shooter remains at large

Police have launched a massive dragnet for an armed suspect they believe fatally shot three people in an Alabama mobile home park.

The shooting took place at a mobile home park near the city of Birmingham earlier Wednesday.

Police in Gardendale are searching for a 51-year-old man following the incident in Willow Bend Drive at the Peachtree Crossings on Wednesday morning. Police asked residents to remain inside most of Wednesday morning as they searched for Lever, who they considered armed and unsafe.

Lever, who has also reportedly lived in Florida, has a long history of arrests, many of which are for drug possession. Lever is accused of sexually abusing a young girl for than five years beginning in 2005 and sometimes forcing a young boy to participate. According to local news, Lever now has charges against him in Pennsylvania for sexual abuse of a minor.

Of note, the shooting comes after Lever had been previously served an order of protection notice in December 2016 in Jefferson County. He asked residents to remain aware, but said he has no reason to believe Lever is still in the Gardendale area.

Officials said if Lever was able to escape by vehicle, he may be in a black Lincoln Navigator, a white Honda Accord with Florida tag# Y92FVJ or a 1986 black Camaro.

At the time, Lever's wife ex-wife claimed that the man was abusing her 11-year-old daughter during unsupervised visitation.

Lever was set to be due in court for both cases in September. Lever was held on $100,000 bail in the first case and posted it, being released from York County Prison afterward.

Police have nevertheless urged the public for vigilance and seek any information in the manhunt that now includes the entire state of Alabama and the Florida panhandle.

A hearing in the Alabama case is scheduled for July 26, a court docket showed.
