YouTube and Google Daydream create VR180 video format

We know that virtual reality videos can be really powerful, which is why we have invested in supporting 360 and VR formats for over two years.

Google has launched the VR180 video format to standardize VR content creation for sharing on YouTube.

Google has already started working with some OEMs like LG, Lenovo, and YI to make 180-degree cameras that will work with the new VR180. It was created in partnership with the broader VR division at Google and the Daydream team.

For now, all YouTube 360-degree videos have the equirectangular projection, which gives the viewer the feel of being a part of the videos.

Furthermore, 360 videos are harder to film and may require a more expensive camera and specialized software.

As you might have guessed, VR180 is a new VR format that will only focus on the 180 degrees in front of the viewer.

So content creators can shoot VR videos using any camera with a VR180 certification.

Google says current creators won't have to alter their filming techniques, while adding that editing tools like Adobe Premiere Pro will soon be compatible.

While YouTube's investment in VR has been fun to watch, 360-degree videos aren't the ideal catch-all for every kind of content - especially considering a majority of VR watchers look at just the first 90 degrees anyway.

Google's move to create a cheaper VR camera is good as there has been skepticism about whether the format will be picked up by brands and companies a lot.

Pick a video, then share it with the phone contacts on your device with a message. Although it will not be up to the standards of a VR experience, it will open up the content to a larger viewer base.

But, there are times you find yourself stuck with a vertical video and you have to watch the same with the black strips on each side.
