Nadal outclasses Wawrinka to win 10th French Open title

Rafael Nadal, the King of Clay, once again dominated the red courts of Roland Garros to win his record breaking 10th French Open title.

"I try my best in all events, that's the real thing", Nadal said. It has been very special to me, and it's true that it is unprecedented. "It's the most important event in my career, so to win here is something I can not describe", Nadal said after his win.

"Complementing the role of his uncle he said, "Without my uncle, I would not have won 10 trophies", said Nadal who will rise to two in the world rankings on Monday". It is not that I am playing more or less aggressive.

The Swiss star hoped to win his fourth Grand Slam title in as many finals, and while the records of each of the players created a breeding ground for intensity, emotion and battle, Nadal surged to a dominant win against Wawrinka 6-2, 6-3, 6-1. It is hard to compare this tournament to any other.

"But you're always expecting a nervous encounter as we saw at the start, both of them were quite nervy but when Rafa calmed down he was able to dismantle Wawrinka's game and he had few chances".

Five-set match, it's going to be a really tough challenge when you play against him", the Swiss player admitted in press conference. "I think from the beginning from my side, for sure, I didn't play my best tennis.

The 32-year-old couldn't take it and it proved to be the only break point he earned all afternoon.

Djokovic drops 1st 2 sets against Thiem in Paris
This year, the bracket brought Djokovic to Thiem in the quarters, and it was the Austrian native moving on this time. It is the fewest number of games Nadal has lost on his way to the last four on the Paris clay.

Gareth Bale hoping to help make more history at Real Madrid
A Champions League final victory over Atletico Madrid last season might have been seen in some quarters as beginner's luck. I think it's the best second half we've had this season.

The only time Wawrinka matched Nadal's strokes was in the early part of the first set in when he held the first two service games and had a break point in the third game. He is 9-0 in past finals at the clay-court major and has not lost a set in this year's tournament, playing as well at age 31 as he ever has.

No matter as he broke through for 4-2 and then went to set point in the eighth game after a relentless forehand barrage sapped the will out of Wawrinka.

He claimed the Musketeers Cup without dropping a set in the tournament for the third time, having lost only 35 games en route to achieving what has been dubbed "La Decima".

Never before had Nadal faced a player who had won the French Open before.

While analysts assessed Nadal's history, his strokes and his long career before the match, Nadal said he didn't focus on the records.

"You were too good", Wawrinka told Nadal during the prize presentation after losing in a Grand Slam final for the first time in four appearances.
