Teenage Daredevils Who Climbed Golden Gate Bridge Prompt Security Evaluations

Once they reached the top of the bridge, Teatime said, the friends made a decision to perform somersaults and hang their bodies to add another level of thrill to the climb.

It is unclear if the two face any charges in connection with their climb. "The Golden Gate Bridge is not an amusement park ride, it is vital public infrastructure and it's a symbol of our community", General Manager Dennis Mulligan told ABC 7.

Teatime and Rector snuck down the Marin Headlands, along the bridge, and once the sun set, climbed the bridge's suspension stays from the shore. In April 2008, the bridge was scaled by two Sausalito men and an Oakland woman to protest China's treatment of Tibet and the impending arrival of the Olympic torch. Teatime said they were mindful of the cars below and the risk they posed to those vehicles.

"The reckless behavior of the individuals who performed this stunt does not distract from this fact", Clemens said.

"We just sort of came out and did it, there was not a plan really", Teatime said.

The video went viral and caught the attention of Homeland Security, which has cameras and motion detectors set-up around and on the bridge. Authorities don't know how the climbers got access to the bridge since their visit didn't trigger any alarms.

"I want to assure you the bridge is safe", said Lisa Locati, the CHP Golden Gate Bridge captain, at yesterday's news conference. He also pointed out that he and his friend did not harm anyone or damage any property.

Clemens said the district will review its security measures to prevent future stunts from happening again.

NASA drops idea of putting humans on first flight of new rocket
NASA and Boeing are investigating the mishap, which was first reported May 10 by NASA Watch, a site that covers the agency. In his statement , Lightfoot outlined the progress of SLS and Orion, which he described as "challenging but going well".

Locati said the bridge's security system was "not created to protect thrill-seekers from harming themselves".

Additionally, other steps could be taken against the climbers.

Teatime says he hopes he won't be arrested and even plans to to contact bridge officials to help them identify flaws in their security system.

"I have climbed tall buildings and cranes, but this is the coolest thing because it is so famous", he said.

Teatime, a senior in high school, doesn't seem concerned about the possible legal implications of all this - state law stipulates up to a $10,000 fine and one year of jail time for trespassing on a restricted area of a bridge.

"We weren't doing anything wrong", he said.

He said the climb was a one-time deal.
