Man City chairman says Aguero won't leave, hopes Toure stays

Man City chairman says Aguero won't leave, hopes Toure stays

Manchester City have no reason to celebrate their first season under Pep Guardiola but are still heading in the right direction, insists chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak.

The arrival of teenager Gabriel Jesus in January saw the 28-year-old, who has scored 122 Premier League goals in 181 appearances since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2011, lose his place in the side.

Manchester City's Argentinian striker Sergio Aguero celebrates after scoring the opening goal of the English Premier League football match between West Bromwich Albion and Manchester City at The Hawthorns stadium in West Bromwich, central England, on October 29, 2016.

"I've read a lot of the speculation on this and it's ridiculous".

"We are team now that expects to win every year at least one trophy, and then to go further every year in the Champions League. It's never been in doubt".

"We've gone through several cycles over the last nine years and we're in the middle of one now but you can see where we're going".

A flurry of new signings does not spell the end for long-time City players Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure, though.

Al-Mubarak also expressed irritation that midfielder David Silva continues to be overlooked for the individual awards.

Khaldoon said: "I think the transition of this squad in this cycle started a year ago".

Toure has a contract that will expire this summer and is yet to be offered a new contract by the club.

Guardiola plays a way that requires "a set of players that function in that system", Al-Mubarak said, and City's board "will support Pep in completing that puzzle".

"There are particular positions that are clear", Al Mubarak added.

"Pep, as you have seen obviously this year, has a lot of trust and confidence in him".

"That clearly requires some work".

"I think the transition of this squad in this cycle started a year ago. Pep knows exactly what he wants and who he wants".
