Japan Breaks From Military Tradition To Protect American Ship

The refueling mission is necessary because of the arrival of the carrier USS Carl Vinson and her escorts off of the Korean Peninsula.

According to Japan's constitution, written under American occupation after the end of the Second World War, the Japanese government may only use force in self-defense - a limitation enshrined in the name of the "Japan Self-Defense Forces".

According to the Asahi Shimbun and Jiji Press, the Izumo will leave the port of Yokosuka near Tokyo in what will be its first deployment alongside a US vessel outside an exercise.

After the mission, Izumo and Sazanami are scheduled to participate in an worldwide naval review scheduled to be held in Singapore on May 15.

The Carl Vinson arrived in the Sea of Japan and kicked off a joint drill with the South Korean navy on Saturday, hours after North Korea launched a ballistic missile in apparent defiance of the US.

President Donald Trump says he isn't ruling out military action against North Korea but has also expressed openness to a future meeting with North Korean ruler Kim Jong Un, offering unusual praise for the third-generation dictator amid the nuclear tensions.

The legislation allows the Self-Defense Forces(SDF) to guard USA ships engaged in such activities as joint exercises and the monitoring of possible ballistic missile launches. While the subs are not as modern as Western or Japanese models, they could sink a U.S. Navy supply ship.

Visits to a government crisis management website surged to the millions in April from a previous record of tens of thousands in March, as the government tweeted and put out fresh instructions for what to do in the event of a missile attack.

North Korea's state media has said the North's military is capable of sinking the U.S. aircraft carrier with a single strike.

"Japan has renounced war, but it seems we are gradually getting embroiled into a conflict", she said. "We have no way but to cooperate with the United States in dealing with this issue". The mission is the first enabled by the legislation, which took effect a year ago and has expanded the role of the Self-Defense Forces.

A batch of Ground Self-Defense Force personnel had been ordered to perform new responsibilities during a United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan, including rescuing United Nations staff under attack.

"It was an excessive reaction that the subway trains were stopped in Tokyo", a 46-year-old third-generation Korean resident of Japan said, adding, "The problem is the Japanese government and public administrations have fanned fears too much".
