It found that men still out-earn women in every state in the union, but Vermont is the closest to equality, with women earning 84.8% of what men earn overall when factors like years of experience, education, and job title are not accounted for. According to the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average full-time working woman earns 20 percent less than the average full-time working man.

"It's an enormous impact that could be created by bringing these women up to where they need to be", Altman says.

That gap is more severe for minority women.

Below, Rodriguez takes us through her tips for women - and anyone who wants to be a bit more like her.

These figures are broad overviews and compare the pay among all full-time, year-round workers. Yet these data also reveal that although most women believe they are being treated fairly, they also believe that most other women aren't.

At a working group hearing last week with companies that are making progress on the pay equity front, the focus was on the other benefits that can help women juggle their professional and personal lives, benefits like schedule flexibility and affordable childcare and elder care.

"With the pay increase and benefits, it gives us the best of both worlds".

"I've had males ask me for more money, and it amazes me how confident they are in doing it", said Dapelo-Garcia, 54, an administrative director for patient access services at Stanford Health Care. "This analysis shows just how damaging that lost income can be for women and their families, as well as the economy and the businesses that depend on women's purchasing power". The gap is also narrower than the national average in New Hampshire, New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey.
