Sessions outlines border enforcement plan while in Nogales


There were fewer than 12,000 people arrested while attempting to cross the border illegally in March 2017, a 64 percent decline from the same time previous year, according to US Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

He also said that any immigrant who illegally reenters the country after having been removed will face a felony charge. Every adult apprehended at the border will be detained.

The DOJ also announced it will hire 50 immigration judges by the end of 2017, along with an additional 75 judges by the end of next year - for context, there are only about 270 immigration judges currently - reflecting what the memo calls "the dire need" to reduce the country's backlog of about 508,000 immigration cases.

"While dramatic progress has been made at the border in recent months, much remains to be done", Sessions told prosecutors in the memo. That same year, 79,340 cases referred to federal prosecutors had an immigration related offense as the lead charge in the case.

"The lawlessness, the abdication of the duty to enforce our immigration laws, and the catch and release practices of old are over", Sessions also reportedly declared in the speech.

"The border is not open. Please don't come." Sessions said. "Instead, the Trump administration, and Mr. Sessions, are set on throwing good taxpayer money after bad on a boondoggle of a wall that will only cause greater harm to families and wildlife along the border, while failing as immigration policy".

The nation's top law enforcement official outlined a series of changes that he said mark the start of a new push to rid American cities and the border of what he described as "filth" brought on by drug cartels and criminal organizations.

Sessions said the new mandate requires federal prosecutors to focus on prosecuting those transporting and harboring undocumented immigrants; immigrants who unlawfully return to the United States after being deported, especially those with "certain aggravating circumstances", such as gang affiliations; and those in the country illegally who have committed document fraud or identity theft.

When Sessions was a USA senator, he frequently charged that the federal government was not doing enough to address illegal immigration.

On the U.S. -Mexico border a year ago CBP seized almost 200 pounds of fentanyl and synthetic opioids, a 25 percent increase over 2015.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump floated the possibility of nixing "birthright laws" that automatically grant citizenship to anyone born on us soil - a popular notion among immigration hardliners.
