Philippines' Duterte dismisses interior secretary

Abella made this announcement in a statement issued on Wednesday, a day after Interior and Local Government Secretary Ismael D. Sueno was sacked.

The minister denied all the allegations, saying the businesses in question belonged to his relatives while the fire truck deal had been closed under his predecessor, adding that he chose to go ahead despite a pending court case because the Australian trucks had more accessories than Chinese ones.

Sueno said he believes that the letter was initiated by his three undersecretaries - John Castriciones, Jesus V. Hinlo, and Emily Padilla - who were piqued because their powers were clipped under the new delegation of authority which he issued last week.

He did not say who would replace Sueno, though there has been speculation Duterte would appoint Ferdinand Marcos Jnr, son of the late Philippine dictator. Antonio Trillanes IV said corruption remained "rampant" in the government and called the firing of Sueno "a convenient excuse".

Abella said the loss of another cabinet member was not a sign of trouble but proof that Duterte was serious about restoring trust in government.

Sueno said he would accept his fate but maintained his innocence over the allegations of corruption. "So this accusation against me is impossible", said Mr Sueno, a former provincial governor and city mayor.

Just last month, Peter Tiu Laviña, who served as Duterte's campaign spokesman, was sacked as head of the National Irrigation Administration.

Sueno's ouster is seen as Duterte's strongest statement yet, and comes shortly after an opposition lawmaker filed impeachment charges against Duterte due to alleged graft and corruption.

There was no immediate indication of whether Sueno would also face criminal charges over the alleged offenses.
