NWS: Islated tornadoes, severe storms possible on Peninsula

The Storm Prediction Center has placed a good portion of the Midlands under an enhanced risk for severe weather. Strong winds, large hail and a tornado are possible.

A forecast map shows the potential for severe weather, including tornadoes, across nearly all of the Southeast on Monday. The main threat will be damaging wind gusts and perhaps an isolated tornado, but hail will also be possible with this storm.

Scattered storms could be severe, with the risk of some damaging winds and isolated tornados.

A strong storm system will bring the threat for severe storms and heavy rain late Sunday into early Monday for southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi.

"While only a few of the numerous storms are now severe, the environment will remain quite favorable and further intensification of storms is expected throughout the afternoon and into the evening", forecasters said. Tornado watches are the most likely. And the region remained under threat of flash floods and severe thunderstorms.

By noon Sunday, hail, risky winds and street flooding had been reported in some regions. Thanks to the available energy even before the heat of day, and rotation with wind as we go up from the surface, this is an area we will be watching very closely.

The NWS also urges those who are in areas subject to flooding to get to higher ground during a flood and do not walk through flood waters.
