NORC Poll: Majority of Americans favor Russia probe

Almost 6 in 10 Americans disapprove of the job Donald Trump is doing as president, according to a new poll conducted by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research over five days before and after the collapse of a GOP proposal to replace former President Barack Obama's health care law.

"The main thing that this month's health care fight in Washington did was make Obamacare more popular than it's ever been before", Public Policy Polling Dean Debnam said in a news release.

Whether people approve or disapprove, the survey found that the majority of Americans believe that Trump has been fulfilling his campaign promises, with 57 percent agreeing or strongly agreeing that he is.

Only 38 percent of registered voters said they approved of the job Trump is doing as president, compared with 51 percent who disapproved. And most Americans - 56pc - describe the national economy as good, while 43pc describe it as poor. And a slender majority say covering all Americans is a federal responsibility - a view embraced by Democrats but not Republicans, who instead focus on access and lower premiums.

The poll was conducted over five days before and after House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., withdrew the bill ahead of a planned House vote.

Health care was the worst of seven issues for Trump tested in the poll, but half of Americans approve of his handling of the economy. More than three-quarters of Democrats favor an independent investigation while only one-quarter of Republicans do.

The shift is an acceleration of the trend Vox's Julia Belluz identified back in February: As Republican leadership approached repealing the bill, both the public in general and Republican voters in particular have liked it more and more.

Miringoff said Trump's eroding Republican support was a "dangerous sign" and that if it continued to go down the president would have more trouble getting his priorities through the GOP-led Congress.

Of the proposed Republican changes examined by the poll, only one received a positive reception.

Donald Trump is the class clown who inexplicably became the President of the United States, grading on a curve, or by any other method, I would give him a big fat "F".

The AP-NORC poll of 1,110 adults was conducted March 23-27 using a sample drawn from NORC's probability-based AmeriSpeak panel, which is created to be representative of the US population.

No more than 1 time in 20 should chance variations in the sample cause the results to vary by more than plus or minus 4 percentage points from the answers that would be obtained if all adults in the US were polled.

Interviews were conducted online and using landlines and cellphones.
