Mother Had Abused Teen In Tennessee Student Kidnapping Case

Barry, a former Tennessee resident, has been credited for helping find 15-year-old Thomas and ex-teacher Cummins at a secluded cabin in California near the OR border.

The California man who called in the tip that helped police find Tad Cummins and Elizabeth Thomas returned to the town where it all started to receive his reward money.

"I go in there and tell her how much I missed her, how much I love her and how much her dog missed her", the father said.

"I won't let him hurt me like that again", she told Inside Edition.

Tad Cummins was arrested after the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said he groomed then kidnapped his 15-year-old student. She also said that her husband contacted her via a phone call from jail.

For his own safety reasons, federal authorities would not disclose what day Cummins will depart California or when he will arrive in Tennessee.

"She's had moments of being carefree and fun, but she's very, very fragile, and that's something the family is watching very carefully", he said. "I just wanted to hear it from him to me", Jill said. "I won't give him the opportunity, ever again". He faces one federal count of transporting a minor with the intent to engage in sexual activity across state lines.

Before his capture April 20, Tad Cummins and the young woman he called his wife slipped into the remote Northern California community of Cecilville unrecognized. "I'm scared to death", she said at the time.

Cummins and daughters, Erica and Ashlee, previously said in a statement they are "glad this chapter of the ordeal is over" and thanked all the law enforcement involved in the case. "I still believe that", she said.

School administrators began investigating Cummins in January after a student reported seeing him kiss Elizabeth on the mouth. Cummins is a former Tennessee teacher.

If convicted, Jack Smith, acting United State Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee said Tad Cummins will face a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years.

"If a person was looking for a teenager that could be easily influenced and easily convinced to do something they shouldn't do, I would say that she would be one that would attract that kind of person", he said.

"You can tell something's a little different, and I'm not going to press it".

School records showed the girl often relied on Cummins "like a friend and a counsellor" when she became upset or anxious at school. "I'm not allowed to ask her about things that happened along the way right now".
