Months After Nomination, Sonny Perdue Confirmed As Ag Secretary


The U.S. Senate confirmed former Georgia Gov. Sonny Purdue as the Secretary of Agriculture on Monday, much to the approval of Nebraska's congressional delegation. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.

The new secretary of agriculture will be sworn in on Tuesday.

Sen. Jon Tester endorsed Perdue on the Senate floor prior to the vote.

President Trump signed an executive order Tuesday telling the Agriculture Department to identify and eliminate potentially unnecessary regulations that "hurt farmers and rural communities".

First District Congressman Roger Marahall commented on the Senate confirmation vote. He worked as a veterinarian in North Carolina before returning to Georgia to be involved in agricultural and transportation businesses.

Regarding those contributions, Lee noted that farms and businesses directly involved in the production, distribution and processing of USA cotton employ more than 125,000 workers and produce direct business revenue of more than $21 billion.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer of NY also talked to Trump about the dairy issue last week in a rare phone call between the two men.
