England blew chance to ruin Podolski's special night: Cahill

Both nations lead their respective World Cup qualifying groups with Germany a flawless 4-0-0 in Group C and England 3-0-1 in Group F.

Podolski, 31, will make his 130th and final appearance by wearing the captain's armband against Gareth Southgate's Three Lions in Dortmund.

For Germany, the match against England is a chance to say goodbye to 31-year-old Galatasaray forward Podolski, who quit global football after Euro 2016 with 48 goals from 129 caps but returns for a farewell game.

"I hope he gets one".

Podolski, who scored 49 goals in his 130 caps, will go down as one of the greatest ever players to pull on a Germany shirt.

"To be honest, I didn't hear what was said but it has been mentioned to me", he said. The new tactical system worked really well, there were individual performances throughout the team that were at a high level.

'We win 1-0 and I score the goal.

"I think we deserved better but you only deserve better if you take your chances so we have to be honest about that part".

Burnley defender Michael Keane and Southampton duo Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse made their England debuts on the night.

A fourth, Sami Khedira, dropped out hours before kick-off with a swollen ankle. Debutant Timo Werner, the RB Leipzig star, led an attacking unit of fellow youngsters Julian Brandt and Leroy Sané, as well as regular Podolski.

"That goal was typical Poldi", Low said.

Keane had also fizzed an effort just over the bar within the first ten minutes off of a corner kick.

Andre Schuerrle laid the ball off for Podolski, whose bullet shot off his left foot gave England goalkeeper Joe Hart no chance from 25 metres out.

Under Southgate, England experimented with a three-man defence for the first time since 2006 and England played well, despite eventually losing to the departing Podolski's long-range strike.

"On Wednesday, there's the emotional game", Germany forward Thomas Mueller said, "on Sunday, the important game".

England, who host Lithuania at Wembley in Sunday's World Cup qualifier, played with a 3-4-3 formation at Dortmund in Southgate's first game in charge since being appointed full-time manager in November.
